My Everyday Style & Beauty Favourites

The six things I actually wear

The jeans — straight leg, mid-rise, dark enough to look deliberate. I own three other pairs. I wear these.

The white shirt. Oversized, cotton, slightly stiff so it doesn’t cling. Tucked in it looks like effort; untucked it looks like I don’t care. Same shirt, two moods.

The knit in a colour that goes with literally everything I own, which for me means a soft neutral. This one’s three years old and looks better now than when I bought it.

The black trousers. The ones I can sit in for six hours. That’s the entire brief and it took me four attempts to find them.

The jacket. The piece that ties everything together. If I could only keep one thing on this list it would be this. It makes jeans-and-a-t-shirt look like an outfit.

The boots. Flat, plain, walkable. I’ve had them resoled once, which felt very adult.

The reason it works

Every top goes with every bottom. That’s the whole trick.

Six pieces that all combine give you more outfits than twelve that don’t, and the moment something only works with one other thing, it stops being part of the six and starts being a project. I don’t have the energy for projects at 8am.

Five beauty things I’ve repurchased

I’m only listing things I’ve bought at least twice. That’s the test — a product I loved once and never rebought is a product I didn’t love.

[MOISTURISER] — Third tub. Nothing dramatic, it just does the job and doesn’t sting.

[TINTED SOMETHING] — Tint over foundation, always. On a normal day I want to look like myself on a good day, not like I’m wearing a face.

[CREAM BLUSH] — The single biggest difference-per-second product I own. Ten seconds, and I stop looking tired.

[LIP THING] — I own eleven. I use this one. The other ten are decorative.

[SPF] — The one I’ll actually put on every morning, which is the only quality that matters in an SPF. The perfect one you skip is worse than the fine one you use.

The three-minute version

On a normal morning: SPF, tint, blush, brows, lip thing. Under five minutes and most of that is waiting for the SPF to sink in.

On days I want to look properly done: add mascara and do the blush a bit higher. That’s the whole upgrade. I’ve never mastered eyeliner and at this point I’ve made peace with it.

The things I regret

The expensive foundation. Beautiful in the shop, too much on my face, and I felt obliged to finish the bottle because of what it cost. Sunk cost, on my cheeks, for four months.

The trousers that only work with heels. They’re lovely. I wear heels roughly twice a year.

The eleven lip products. See above. I keep buying them because they’re a small nice thing that feels like a treat, which is a real reason, just not a good one.

Anything I bought because it was on sale. A discount on something I didn’t want is not a saving. I know this. I do it anyway, roughly twice a year.

If you want to work out your own list

Look at the last month. Photos, laundry, memory — whatever’s easier. Not what you meant to wear or use. What you actually did.

That’s your real list. Everything else is decoration, and the decoration is fine to own, it just shouldn’t be taking up decision space every morning.

Then find the one piece that goes with everything you own, and build outward from it. There’s almost always one. Mine’s the jacket, and I’d fight someone for it.
